Born May 17, 1922 in Emerson Twp., Gratiot County, Michigan, and died July 17, 2010 in Wayne County, Michigan. He was the son of Floyd D. Jones and Margaret G.(McDaid)Jones. Brother of Leo(Vera)Jones, Richard(Helen) Jones and Dorothea(Jack)Gagnon. His parents and siblings all predeceased him.
He married Eleanor D. Robertson on July 10, 1948 in Napoleon, Ohio. Eleanor preceeded Walter in death on December 15, 1983. On June 23, 1990 Walter married Rosemary A. Alexander in Plymouth, Michigan. Rosemary survives him.
Walter and Eleanor were the parents of four children, Shirley(Robert)Mitchell, Margaret Lattimore, John(Rachel)Jones and Michael(Karen)Jones. His children survive him, with the exception of Michael, who passed away June 1, 2007. He is also survived by four stepchildren, Hope Alexander, Matthew(Maureen)Alexander, John(Rebecca)Alexander and Mark Alexander. Walter is also survived by eight grandchildren,Matthew Mitchell, Patrick(Erika)Mitchell, Nathan(Karen)Mitchell, Jeremy(Briget)Mitchell, Jason(Andrea)Lattimore, Erik Lattimore, Scott Jones and Joshua Jones: and nine step grandchildren, Eric Cerecedes, Joe Cerecedes, Luke Alexander, Katie Alexander, Kristin Alexander, Caroline Alexander, Andrew Alexander, William Alexander and Nicholas Alexander: four great grand children, Merrick and Emerson Lattimore, Mira and Luna Mitchell: two step great grandchildren, Kaya and Asura Cerecedes.
Walter served in the Army in Italy during WWII, February 1943 to August 1945. While in the service he was a boxer. He was a tough guy, he liked to chop wood for his fireplace quite often outdoing his grandson, who sometimes helped him. He worked for several companies over the years: Lyons Inc., Ried Service, Burroughs, and he retired from Sears in 1994 at the age of 72.
After retiring, he and his wife Rosemary traveled extensively to many locations all ove the US and world, England, Wales, Ireland, Alaska Carribbean, South America, Canada and the Middle East. They had many friends to share good time with, going to plays, concerts, parties and movies. Walter had a long(88years) and fulfilling life. He loved to read books. He had a great sense of humor. He was always telling great jokes. But most of all he was a kind and loving man who will be missed by all. We will always love you, Walter, Dad, Grandpa and Great Grandpa.....
Funeral Services will take place Wednesday, July 21, 2010, 1pm at the Schrader-Howell Funeral Home, 280 S. Main St., Plymouth. With The Reverend Dr. John N. Grenfell II officiating. Friends may visit Wednesday beginning at 11am until time of service. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to the Plymouth Community Band.
