Thomas Knight Sr.

November 25, 1939 — May 29, 2016

Tom Knight, of Plymouth, Michigan, passed away May 29, 2016. He leaves behind his wife, Norma, sons Thomas Knight, Jr., (Jamie), and David (Kate), and grandchildren Nolan, Eleanor and Meredith, mother, Mary Knight, and sisters, Beverly Torok and Elizabeth Radford.

Tom and Norma were childhood sweethearts in Wyandotte, Michigan. They met in 4th grade, dated in high school, then reunited later in college. Tom drove from Michigan State to visit her at Eastern Michigan, where they would live in married housing while Norma completed her degree. He was a fiercely devoted and supportive husband to Norma, who suffered a debilitating stroke at age 37. They raised their two young sons, traveled and built a home together. They were married 54 years, but their love story stretched almost seven decades.

Tom spent a lifetime in public service. He served on the Riverview School Board for twenty years. He coached Little League baseball, youth hockey, and youth football. He enjoyed watching his sons college athletics: Toms baseball at Albion and Daves football at Michigan. His children and grandchildren were a source of immeasurable pride.

Tom served as member and president of the Riverview High School Athletic Boosters Club. Tom was a founder of SOS, (Save Our Sports), raising more than $50,000 in the 1980s, to support youth athletic opportunities in the Riverview community during difficult financial times.

Starting as a small Downriver business owner with his brother-in-law, Toms HVAC contracting career led him to incorporate Community Comfort Service with his son Dave in Canton, Michigan in 1992.

Tom appreciated beautiful clothing; he loved buying clothes for Norma, and he wrecked many fine pairs of shoes on construction sites. He enjoyed cooking, and his repertoire included meat lasagna, meatballs, and fabulous grilled meat.

Tom was a man of giant presence and fearless heart. He loved, worked, supported and served his family and community selflessly. He was natural leader and tenacious fighter. His presence and companionship will be sorely missed, but his impact upon those he touched will be long remembered.
