Robert V. V. Rice, Jr., for twenty-four years a resident of Hillsdale and for twenty-five years a resident of Northern Michigan, died on October 28, 2024. He was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on December 30, 1931, to Robert V. V. and Frances P. Rice. He received his primary and secondary schooling both there and for two years at the Hill School in Pennsylvania. In subsequent years, he attended the University of Michigan, married Margaret Keith of Eton, Georgia, and between 1970 and 1994 taught English at Hillsdale College.
Throughout his retirement (the first 16 years of which he spent fly fishing and skiing), he remembered with unceasing gratitude the College’s many kind recognitions of his efforts at teaching, the loving support of his family while he made these efforts, and his students, especially when they voted him an honorary alumnus of their alma mater.
After enjoying retirement in northern Michigan, Robert moved to Canton Township in southern Michigan to be closer to family. He quickly enjoyed forming many friendships in his new community.
Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret. Surviving members of his family are his son and daughter Robert V. V. Rice, III and Frances Elizabeth Rice Wagner, their respective spouses Rebecca Brown Rice and Robert Wagner, and dear companion, Sandy Lemelin.
Burial will take place after a short graveside service for family and friends at Cross in the Woods Cemetery at Indian River, Michigan on Saturday, November 2, 2024 at 12:00 Noon.
Memorial donations may be made to Oakland Hospice Foundation, Attn: Leslie: 7125 Orchard Lake Road, Suite 222, West Bloomfield Township, MI 48322.
