Robert J. Kent of Plymouth passed away on October 31, 2022, at the age of 89. He was the only son and second of four children born to Robert and Corrine Kent. Robert was a beloved husband of 55 years to Diane Kent, loving father to Kathryn (Thomas) Moss and Robert (Jennifer) Kent, and proud grandfather of Alexandra, Andrew, and Erik Moss.
Raised in Detroit, Robert attended Redford High School and after graduation he joined the United States Army. A skilled marksman, he served in the Eighth Army Honor Guard and spent much of his service time as a palace guard in South Korea during the aftermath of the Korean War. Following his tours of duty, he received a B.A. in Education from Wayne State University. Robert chose to give back to the community he grew up in by teaching science in Detroit Public Schools for 8 years. He went on to earn two Master’s degrees from Eastern Michigan University, which he used to teach reading and writing to emotionally and learning challenged teens at Redford Union Schools for 29 years until his retirement in 1998.
Robert cherished his time with his family and his hobbies, such as golf and bowling. He and Diane were able to enjoy many cruises and traveling adventures around the world. He was particularly fond of his travels to England and Scotland, but also adored spending time at their cottage in northern Michigan. He incorporated his hobbies when spending time with his children as well, building things such as a Victorian dollhouse with his daughter Kathryn or model cars and airplanes with his son Robert. He was proud to carry on these traditions when restoring this same dollhouse with his granddaughter in later years. During his retirement, he was able to travel to many reunions and events with his Honor Guard brothers around the country.
Robert will be remembered most for his kindness and his quick sense of humor, which he used so often to delight his family and friends. He is dearly loved and will be greatly missed by many.
