Madeleine Gray Greene of Plymouth, passed away August 3, 2017 at the age of 88. She was a member of the Detroit unit of the Women’s Overseas Service League. Madeleine was born in Detroit, Michigan on September 10, 1928 one of Frank and Cassie Gray’s six children. She was a graduate of Wayne State University, the first member of her family and the only girl in her high school class to earn a college degree. Overseas, she taught at a USAF school at Orly Air Field just outside Paris, France.
When asked about her branch of service, she replied, “Over 30 years of combat, teaching in the Detroit Public School System.” She was an avid gardener and prided herself on walking the Annual 5 Mile Mackinac Bridge Walk each Labor Day. All three of her brothers served their country; 2 in World War II and one in Korea.
Madeleine is survived by her son John Greene, daughter-in-law Rebecca, and her grandsons John-Bradley, Bryce, and Sterling. Also survived by her siblings Patricia Lukina and Dennis and Nancy Gray, many nieces and nephews, and Teresa, Thomas, and Robert.
