Larry Joiner age 82 of Novi, paseed away on May 11, 2011. Born in Detroit to parents Forest and Esther Joiner. Served in the United States Army during WWII. After the war ended he would fall in love and marry Marlene McMellen and be together for over 60 wonderful years. Together they were blessed with three loving daughters: Kathy (Mike) Ballard, Kimberly Joiner and Kelly (Gary) Pollack. Proud grandfather of Jesse Ottis Ballard, Devan Ballard, Carly, Avery and Emery Pollack. Dear brother of Gail Lindman.
Larry was a proud graduate of Western Michigan University. In 1955 he became the football and swimming coach for Bentley High School in Livonia. In 1971 he would become the first Athletic Director for Churchill High School. While at Churchill, Larry was the driving force behind bringing womens athletics into the schools. Many of the womens sports programs in Livonia have gone on to win numerous state titles because of the hard work and determination of Larry Joiner.
Mr. Joiner will lie in state on Monday, May 16, 2011 from the First United Methodist Church 45201 North Territorial Rd, Plymouth beginning at 11:00am until 12:00pm when the Rev. Dr. John Grenfell III with conduct his funeral service. Arrangements entrusted to the Schrader-Howell Funeral Home, Plymouth.
