James Stapleton passed away at Sinai-Grace Hospital in Detroit, on Saturday morning, February 11, 2012, at the age of 86. James was born in Raleigh, North Carolina, on March 2, 1925, the son of Barnett and Elizabeth (Maynard) Stapleton. His early years were spent in the south and in the later years of World War II, he joined the United States Army and participated in action in the European Theater of Operations. In 1948, he married Mary, and together they shared 58 years of married life. Mary passed away in 2006. Jim spent over thirty years with Ford Motor Company working as a machinist, principally in the Rawsonville plant. One of Jim's favorite past times was listening to the Detroit Tigers play on the radio. He was a member of the Allen Park Masons and Shriners clubs. He is survived by his two daughters, Beverly (Gary) Percy and Terri (Larry) Scherbarth; three grandchildren, Christina Percy, Justin Scherbarth and Carley Scherbarth; four great grandchildren, Nathan, Austin, Madeline and Carter; and his brothers and sisters.
Visitation will be held on Monday from 1pm - 4pm and 6pm - 8pm at the Schrader-Howell Funeral Home, 280 South Main Street, Plymouth. Funeral services will take place Tuesday at 11am with Reverend Drex Morton officiating. James will then be laid to rest beside his wife at Michigan Memorial Cemetery in Flat Rock.
