It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of James Henry Penn, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Jim passed away peacefully at the age of 71 after a long and courageous battle with illness.
Jim was born on March 11, 1952, in Detroit, Michigan, to his late parents, Harold and Enid (Whetter). He spent his early years in Northville before moving to Plymouth, where he spent most of his life. Jim was a hard-working man who was passionate about his work as the building official for the City of Plymouth, a job he held for three decades. He was known for his dry English wit, which he used to lighten the mood and make everyone around him smile.
Jim was also an active member of the Masonic community, and he deeply valued the camaraderie and brotherhood that he found within the organization. He was an avid fan of ice hockey and particularly loved the Detroit Red Wings. Jim’s enthusiasm for the game was contagious, and he enjoyed sharing his passion with his family and friends, attending countless live games.
In addition to his love of work and hockey, Jim was a devoted family man. He was a loving husband to his wife Averil, and a proud and supportive father to his two sons Kevin (Stacey) Penn and Matthew (Mareike) Penn. Jim had four grandchildren Jack, Willy, Anouk, and Ida. He was also a beloved brother to his two brothers Gregg (Linda) Penn and Stephen Penn; and two sisters Enid (Rick) Comito and Margaret (Michael) Steeb. Jim’s kindness and generosity touched the lives of everyone who knew him, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of calling him a friend or family member.
Jim’s legacy lives on through the memories and stories that he leaves behind. His family and friends take comfort in knowing that he is now at peace and reunited with his parents. Jim’s family kindly requests that any donations be made to the charity of your choice in lieu of flowers. Thank you, Jim, for the love and laughter you brought into our lives.
