Irving Henry Kananen, a beloved member of the Plymouth community, passed away on August 31, 2023, at the age of 91. Irving was born on June 3, 1932, in Houghton, Michigan to his late parents Henry and Saima (née Airikainen) Kananen.

Irving led a fulfilling life that left an indelible mark on those who had the pleasure of knowing him. After completing his education, he dedicated himself to shaping young minds as a physical education teacher in the Detroit public schools. He had a passion for teaching and made a lasting impact on countless students throughout his career.

In addition to his career achievements, Irving proudly served his country in the Army and was a veteran of the Korean War. His dedication and sacrifice to protect our nation will always be remembered and honored.

Family was paramount in Irving's life. He shared 61 wonderful years with his loving wife, Patricia. Their bond was unbreakable, and their love for one another served as an inspiration to all who knew them. Although Irving's son Keenen Kananen has preceded him in death, his memory will forever live on in the hearts of those he left behind.

Irving leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion through his surviving family members. He was a loving father to Guy (Ana-Maria), Todd (John Takacs), and Bill (Kristen) Kananen. Irving took great pride in watching his children grow into successful individuals who carry forward his values of kindness and compassion.

As a loving grandfather, Irving found immense joy in spending time with his grandchildren: Patrick, Erika (Dustin) Stefan, Audrey, Carly, Alexander, and Hope Kananen. Their laughter and happiness brought him great warmth and fulfillment.

Irving is also survived by his brother Melvin Kananen and nephew Dean Kananen. The bond shared between siblings is truly special, and Irving cherished every moment spent with Melvin. Their support for each other provided strength and comfort throughout their lives.

Friends remember Irving for his unwavering integrity, gentle nature, and infectious sense of humor. He had a way of making everyone feel welcome and valued, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
