Irvin P. Layton

November 21, 1926 — January 14, 2016

Passed away at St. Mary Mercy Hospital in Livonia on Thursday, January 14, 2016 at age of 89. Irvin was born in Detroit on November 21, 1926, the son of Willard L. and Esther M. ( nee Smith ) Layton. At an early age the family moved to Perryville, Missouri where he did his schooling. Upon finishing his schooling he went to work for Perryville Auto both before and after his service in the United States Army. He had entered the Army after World War II and was released from active duty until the Korean War broke out whereupon he was again called up to serve. He saw service in Korea, enduring harsh winter climates which caused him severe frost bite. He received the Purple Heart while in service there. After his service he returned to Perryville where he married his high school sweetheart, the former Shirley Ann Linebarger on October 4, 1952. The couple remained in Missouri for a few more years then moved to Detroit where Irvin went to work for Fisher Body. A short while later he went to work for Sears where he spent the next 25 years retiring in the late 1980's. The family moved to the Plymouth area where they have resided for the last twenty years. Irvin loved fixing things and proud of the fact he never had to call a repairman in. He loved his gadgets, he was a true fixit man. With his wife they traveled the world. They visited Germany, Switzerland and Italy in Europe and back home journeyed across the country and to Hawaii. The couple enjoyed going to Las Vegas and taking in country music shows in Branson, Missouri. Yet the most important part of his life was taking care of his wife and family. In 2014 he lost Shirley, the love of his life. He continued taking care of himself and it was only recently that his health began to fade. He is survived by his children, Michael Barbara Layton, Karen John Gillis, Alan Gail Layton, Randall Renae Layton, Mark Terri Layton and Timothy Layton. Fifteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren also survive. Visitation will be held at the Schrader-Howell Funeral Home, 280 South Main Street, Plymouth on Sunday, January 17th from 3 pm until 8 pm. A Scripture Service will be held at 7 pm. Visitation will continue on Monday, January 18th from 10 am until the time of the funeral mass at 10:30 am at Our Lady of Good Counsel, 47650 North Territorial Road ( at Beck Road ) Plymouth. On Wednesday he will be laid to rest with his wife at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly where military honors will be rendered.
