Passed away at Angela Hospice in Livonia on Thursday, June 15, 2017 at the age of 101. Irene was born in Chicago, the daughter of Stephen and Rozalia ( nee Bertalan ) Kovacs. Early in her life her family moved back to Michigan where they were involved in farming. In 1927 she graduated from the Patchin School in then what was Nankin Township, now Westland. Later the family moved to Detroit and as the youngest of six children she stayed to help her mother until her death in 1949. During the 1940's she worked as a retail clerk with J. L. Hudson's in downtown Detroit and later at the Northland store retiring when she was 65. She met her future husband, Harold E. Peters, after he returned from serving in the armed services during World War II and they were married on June 7, 1952. The family remained in Detroit until Harold's passing in 1982 whereupon she moved to Canton. Irene is survived by her son Luke Skywalker and his wife Cheryl Delaney and grandson Brett Cory Skywalker. Visitation will be held at the Schrader-Howell Funeral Home, 280 South Main Street, Plymouth on Monday from 1 pm until 9 pm. Funeral services will be conducted from her church, St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1343 Penniman, Plymouth, on Tuesday at 11 am with the Reverend Paul Schaefer presiding. She will be laid to rest beside her husband at Grand Lawn Cemetery in Detroit.
