George Ernie Scott, Jr. passed away peacefully February 9, 2016 at the age of 91. Beloved husband of Elaine (Tatro) for 34 years. Preceded in death by parents, George Ernest Scott, Sr. and Ruth Janet (Moffett), brother, Russell C. Scott and sisters, Mary E. Fuller and Georgeene C. Wood. Dear stepfather of Michael Phillips (Patricia), William Phillips (Deborah) and the late Jeffrey Phillips. Step-Grandfather of nine and step-Great-Grandfather of 16.
Ernie was born and raised in Detroit attending Cooper Burroughs and Cass Tech High School (Printing Department). He volunteered and served in the United States Navy in World War II. After the war, he attended the University of Detroit and Woodbury University in Los Angeles.
In 1947, he started working in the advertising business in Detroit and founded Scott Advertising in 1954. In 1955, he founded Local Arts and Crafts Monthly, later to be changed to Ceramic Arts and Crafts. The magazine began with 24 pages in black and white and grew to 228 pages. All articles were illustrated in full color and contained many pages of full-color advertising. In 1957, the name was changed to Scott Advertising and Publishing and a complete printing department was added.
In 1960, he founded Ceramic Trade News and Hobby Arts and Crafts Magazine. He printed the three magazines. He published ceramics and china painting textbooks and did commercial printing. In 1983, Ernie was listed in Whos Who in the United States, Whos Who in the World and, by the American Biographical Institute for distinguished service in the field of publishing. He produced many Michigan hobby festivals, managed two interior decorating shows and two photography shows for the Detroit Free Press. He also managed two new products and invention shows.
Ernie enjoyed baseball. He was a pitcher and outfielder in the Graphic Arts fast pitch softball league for over 16 years and was always a member of their all-star team. He was also a baseball letterman in college.
Ernie wrote the words and music to 123 songs 5 of which were commercially recorded. He was a member of the Nashville Songwriters Association.
