George Dean Hopper, age 81 of Westland, passed away peacefully at Angela Hospice on Friday, February 11, 2022.
George was born May 31, 1940 in Detroit, Michigan to Victoria (Metro) and Harold Hopper.
He is survived by his wife Jan (Katchka) and five children, Michael (Debra) Hopper, Sandra (Kevin) Kazmierczuk), Christy (Tom) Winterhalter, Jennifer Hopper, Nicole (Brad) Capps and Melissa (Reggie) Busby. Proud grandpa of ten grandchildren, Cassandra Winterhalter, Kayleigh Williams, Brenden Currier, Alyssa Laforge, Adam Kazmierczuk, Jacob Williams, Katie Williams, Kendra Capps, Gillian Winterhalter and Brooklyn Busby. In addition to his parents George was preceded in death by his sisters Margaret Hopper and Mabel Allard.
George proudly served in the U.S. Army (1958-1962) last stationed at the 4th Missile Battalion (Nike-Hercules) 67th Artillery in San Rafael California where he was a Air Defense Crewman for Surface-to-Air (SAM) Missile Battery. Authorized to wear the Sharpshooter Badge for M-1 Rifle and Carbine. Authorized to wear the Basic Missileman (SAM) Launcher Badge. He spent 18 years at Chrysler as a supervisor. He spent 20 plus years in security most of those years at Compuware Corp.
George loved being a dad and grandpa more than anything. He loved attending Plymouth Whalers games with his son Mike, helping any of his sons in laws with a home project, being present at all grandkids sport or school events, backyard BBQ’s, bonfires, daily walks with his dog Lady and watching tv with his cat Cynder. He loved all animals and could always be counted on to help dogsit for a granddog and loved to feed the neighborhood squirrels. In his younger years he enjoyed working on cars and woodworking as a hobby. He loved spending time in the Clam River/Torch Lake area and being with family.
In Honor of George and his love for animals, the family requests donations be made to your favorite animal rescue.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
