George B. Smith, age 89, died November 12, 2017 in Novi Michigan. He was a longtime resident of Plymouth. Formerly from Wayne, Michigan where he attended Wayne High School and played football on the 1945 and 1946 state championship “class B” teams. He loved football and was also on the track team winning the State Shot Put Championship in 1944 and 1945.
George went on to Michigan State University and played football on the ’47, ’48, ’49 teams. In 1949 he led the nation as an extra point kicker. He was also on boxing team.
After college he spent two years in the Army due to his ROTC officer’s commitment. During this time he married Mary Elizabeth Schlecht, his college sweetheart whom he loved and admired all his wonderful life.
George started George Smith Realty and Mortgage Company eventually founding Mayflower Mortgage which he sold to Republic Bank. George was a life member of the Washtenaw Country Club and belonged to Quail Creek Country Club in Naples, Florida. George spent many Christmases with his family in the Caribbean and traveled extensively with the Nomads. He enjoyed summers at his summer home in Horton Bay Club near Charlevoix and in the winter in Naples where he had a condo.
George loved his children with all his heart. Gregory (Pamela), Barbara, Thomas (Marilyn), Dan (Diana) and Timothy (Sue). He had eight fantastic grandchildren, Tanner, Brad, Steven, Tyler, Alexandra, Kelli, Danny and AJ.
Private Cremation Services have been entrusted to the Schrader-Howell Funeral Home. A Memorial Service will be scheduled at a later date.
