Donald A. Thomas passed away October 16, 2015 at the age of age 85. He was born May 22, 1930 in Detroit to Albert and Helen (Waltz) Thomas. He is the beloved husband of Virginia Ginger Thomas (Long), dear step-father of the late Karen Long, the late James Long and Tamara (Phil) Johnston, dear step father-in-law of Judy Long, dear step grandfather of Edward Long, Philip (Heather) Johnston, Jr., Andrew (Jennifer) Johnston, Christopher Johnston, Jennifer Johnston, Kathryn Long and Emily Long and step great grandfather of Rebecca, Dylan and Elise. He was preceded in death by his parents and 6 brothers and sisters. Donald retired 17 years ago from the Detroit Free Press after 40 years of service. He started at the Detroit Times which later became part of the Free Press. While there he worked in the mailing room as a printing operations specialist. He served his country in the armed forces during the Korean Conflict. He was a proud member of the V.F.W. Donald loved to play cards, travel, watch TV and the Detroit Tigers. Most of all he loved spending time with his wife and family. He was deeply loved and will be missed. Funeral Wednesday, October 21, 2015, 3pm at Schrader-Howell funeral Home, 280 S. Main St., Plymouth. Friends may visit beginning at 12 noon. Donald will be interred at Great lakes National Cemetery with full Military Honors. Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society.
