Chet Comstock went to be with his Lord on June 7th , at the age of 96. He remained younger than his years until the very end, surprising many. He will be remembered with a smile by all, for his love of a good joke and quirky sense of humor. His children will remember him for his ageless passion for learning, persistence in the face of adversity, and endless love and support for them. Chet was born in Pittsburgh, PA, April 25, 1918, but spent most of his early life in San Francisco. He graduated from Oakland Technical High School in 1937. His adventures and experiences were wide and varied. He and a friend loved to ride the rails, traveling and making friends as they went. He joined the Civil Conservation Corp, where he worked in Camp Seiad, CA, as a radio repairman. Later, he worked to assemble the very first B-24 bomber for Consolidated Aircraft in San Diego before joining the U.S. Army Air Force in 1943. During WW II he served as an instructor at the Ground School in Smyrna, TN, and in the China-Burma-India Theater as a ground crew mechanic. He graduated from the Art Center School of Design in Los Angeles on the GI Bill, and later traveled east, working for Raymond Lowey in NYC. He didn't care for NYC and moved to Detroit in the early 50's to work for Sundberg-Ferrar. In 1955 he went to work for Chrysler Engineering and it was there that he met Irene, his wife of 58 years. Over his long career as an industrial designer he also worked for Youngstown Kitchens in Salem, OH, Harley Earl, Dressagraph-Multigraph, Massey-Ferguson, and Excello. Never one to consider age of much importance, he retired at age 83 from Rousch Industries. He remained active in his retirement years: kayaking at 90, fishing with his grandchildren, painting, and kite-flying. He was a generous, loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother-in-law, and friend and will be missed beyond words. He was preceded in death by his grandson Christopher Mosblech, brothers Ralph and Woodrow Comstock, sister in law Adele Comstock, and sister in law JoAnn Schultz. Until we meet again, he leaves behind his wife, Irene (Smith); children: Kristin (Kevin) Mosblech, Gayle Plotkowski, Brett (Pam) Comstock, and Brian Comstock; 11 grandchildren: Aaron Plotkowski, Derek VanVleck, Cody, Kendyl, and Garrett Mosblech, Grace, Gabe, Luke, Caleb, and Andrew Comstock, Hanna Aburouman; one great-granddaughter, Olivia Plotkowski; and brother Southard Modry. Funeral service Friday, June 13, 2014 at 11:00am at the Schrader-Howell Funeral Home 280 South Main St, Plymouth. Visitation Thursday from 3:00pm - 9:00pm. Burial will take place at McDonald Cemetery in Port Lambton, Ontario, Canada on Monday. Memorials may be made to the Calvary Baptist Church 43065 Joy Rd, Canton, Michigan 48187, or Alzheimer's Association, Greater Michigan Chapter, 20300 Civic Center Drive, Suite 100, Southfield, MI 48076-4166.
