Anne Marie Gurka

July 25, 1926 — April 7, 2016

Anne Marie (Welding) Gurka was born on July 25th in Detroit, MI. A longtime resident of Plymouth, MI., She joined her heavenly Father on April 7th 2016. She was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Anna Marie, as well as her parents, Francis (Frank) and Hedwig (Hattie Przybyla) Welding plus her siblings Marie Kudron, Evelyn Schoenborn, Joe Kuzyns Irene Lukomski
Growing up in Detroit, Michigan, she later married Stanley Joseph Gurka, Jr. in 1941. She raised her children while teaching tap and ballet dancing at the Gardner Elementary School and the Allen Park School of Dance. Additionally, Anne was Director of Modeling for Eva McKeons Hollywood School of Modeling and Dance.
At that time the State of Michigan was known as the Water Wonderland State and modeling contests to choose Miss Water Wonderland were held. Anne chaperoned these contestants.
In 1955 Anne began coursework from the Texas School of Practical Nursing. This training led into working as an operating room technician at Northwest General Hospital. After completing her AA degree, Anne continued her education at the University of Michigan.
She was actively involved in Suicide Prevention for over 11 years becoming the Director of the Detroit Suicide Prevention Center under the supervision of Bruce H. Danto, M.D. She received a commendation from the Michigan governor for her thousands of hours of volunteer work.
In the early 80s Anne hosted the Detroit radio show Straight Talk on Mental Health on WCAR answering questions from a myriad of listeners.
Anne began her career working as a counselor under Eugene Donovan, M.D. at the Metro Substance Abatement Program when the L.A.A.M. program started. In addition, she became fully qualified under the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) for Detroit under Dr. Donovan. She co-authored a paper with him in the late seventies.
She moved on to Midwest Mental Health in Dearborn Michigan, which eventually merged with Detroit Industrial Clinics where she assumed the role of Program Director. When this program closed, she returned as a NCAC II, S.W.T. general counselor with the Livonia and Northville Counseling Center. She continued private counseling during semi-retirement. She enjoyed her dog, Skipper, reading, bowling and the company of friends during her many years in Plymouth, MI.
She is survived by her children, Douglas (and Linda), Audrey (and Joe Gaul) and Gregory (and Linda) plus seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Monday from 2 pm until 9 pm at the Schrader-Howell Funeral Home, 280 South Main Street, Plymouth. A Scripture Service will be conducted at 7 pm. Visitation will continue on Tuesday from 10 am until the time of the Mass of the Resurrection at 10:30 am at St. Kenneth Catholic Church, 14951 Haggerty Road ( south of Five Mile ) Plymouth.
