How do you Choose a Headstone?

Schrader-Howell Funeral Home • January 17, 2022

After you have looked at funeral homes in Plymouth Township, MI, and laid your loved one to rest, you might be wondering what your options are when it comes to choosing a headstone. You will need to have the answers to multiple considerations before deciding, so it's imperative to have the correct information before you make a purchase.

What is the Purpose?

Headstones come in different names and are known as grave markers, tombstones, or even gravestones. They are intended to be a marker for a gravesite to help locate the deceased and can be highly beneficial if you consider any future generations who may want to visit the site.

Different Types

There are four different kinds of headstones to choose from, and they are:

Kerbed: this option is a traditional monument that lies across the ground and can be combined with an upright headstone.

Upright: This is the traditional option that you will see in cemeteries. They are meant to be attached with a base made of concrete and are generally made from granite or marble.

Flat: These are more minor variations that you may see around a gravesite and can be made of stone or bronze and are flat to the ground. They generally will come in a range of colors and finishes for more personalization.

Raised-Top: this choice is generally a block made of concrete or stone and has a slant from the rear to the front face of the marker.

Materials

There are multiple different options for materials available on the market, including:

  • Stainless steel is a sturdier option and more weather resistant
  • Marble is an excellent choice due to its brighter coloration and its beautiful finish
  • Limestone is popular simply due to its traditional value
  • Granite is one of the most flexible options and comes in multiple colors with durable finishes.

Other Options

You will want to consider the type of design that the stone's finish will have. There are multiple shapes available on the market, ranging from a heart to a cross, so research companies before purchasing.

You will also need to choose the kind of inscription and engraving you would like to have on the marker's face. Be mindful that some companies charge by text, so understand your budget before proceeding.

Traditionally you will want to have the full name of the individual who passed away, the date of birth, and a short message about the individual.

There are multiple things to consider when it comes to creating a headstone that genuinely honors and reflects the uniqueness of your loved one. If you're having difficulty finding phrases, we recommend talking to friends or family members to see if they have any suggestions, or you can work with your funeral director regarding this.
